The heart of a mother

As Yeseo's first day of competing in Korea's National Paralympic Games came to an end, her mother Soonim wrote an update on Threads.

Here is the message in English.

"Today is the second day of the National Paralympic Games for disabled students in Gwangyang, Korea. Yeseo has a rare disease called Luscan-Lumish Syndrome (LLS) – never before seen in Korea. For the first time in her life, she was registered to participate in this year’s Paralympic Games.

Basically, having LLS is like being a walking time bomb; there is no cure or medicine. Actually, the main reason Yeseo started swimming is to control her weight and overgrowth. And as with all new things, it wasn’t sheer talent. It was and is hard work.

Today, she participated in three rounds.

Preliminary rounds

First up was the preliminary round of her group. Unfortunately, she got disqualified. Reportedly, she didn’t follow the rules during the second half of the competition. It was really sad because she had good results: she came in second.
After that, Yeseo competed in the preliminary round of other events and came in third.

Final swimming competition of the day

Later in the afternoon, the third and final competition of the day was scheduled. She came in seventh.

After finishing all three competitions, Yeseo felt depressed. The pressure of competing got to her. She was teary-eyed and exhausted.

LLS and bodily reactions

Before, when she had competitions, she would throw up after - as a way to let go of the stress.
LLS  is a mild to moderate intellectual disability and/or autism spectrum disorder. This means that Yeseo processes things differently.

Despair

I wonder if other people think I am a bad mother. If my child had had a developmental disability, initially, I would have been heartbroken. But, then, I could have sympathized with my child and we would have continued to live a life of love. This isn't the same with LLS. Yeseo needs weekly therapy and exercise, and the future is uncertain.

God is fair but I guess not to us.”
